People seem to like a little history
Wow, another year has passed. It got me to thinking about the old days. I know you think of Durfee's as an old time store but we do have a modern computer system that allows us to determine the value of our inventory at the end of the year with just a few extra button clicks. This was not always the case. When we were kids my dad would distribute clipboards to everybody and we would literally count everything in the store. We fill out pages upon pages of item descriptions, counts, and retail price. Then, our two bookkeepers would add up the columns using adding machines. I remember being very excited when we finally got a calculator (which was huge and expensive). Well, the good news is that it is now done with a computer and we scan in the inventory all throughout the year. It allows us to pay more attention to the customers than to the inventory. (Boy, I don't miss doing all that by hand.)
On another note, the newspaper put my dad on the page of "The famous and not so who passed on" for the year. I never really thought of my dad as famous but I guess I'm proud of the fact that he got into the newspaper's list. This is what they said " Ray Durfee, 88, who for decades ran Durfee Hardware in Cranston's Rolfe Square and served as a state representative and senator, Feb 2. The old-fashioned, family-run store became a quaint counterpoint to modern big-box chain stores".
My stuff
My microwave died. If you pushed the door open button slightly it would run. Let off on it a little and it would not run. I opened it up and it had a very strange problem. If you pushed on the door switch it would electrically "close" but if you pushed it all the way to its bottom it would "open". Its not supposed to do that. So I replaced the switch but in doing so I blew the fuse inside the microwave late on saturday afternoon. It was an 10amp ABC fuse. Where the heck would I get one of those? (YES, Durfees!). Some fuses are fast acting like the ABC and others are "slow blow" fuses often used for things with motors in them. Make sure you always replace a fuse with the same type.
I put a couple of beds in my house so I had to get some caster cups to preserve my wood floor. These are upstairs at Durfees.
I had a friend need to install some electric heating so I bought wire, boxes, and a breaker to do the install with him.
